The reason standby power matters here is written into the city's geography rather than its invention history. Four watercourses converge at Dayton, and the same low, open river ground that made it a natural settlement site in 1796 leaves the metro exposed to the severe storms that take distribution lines down -- most memorably in the 2019 Memorial Day tornado outbreak.
